Chapter 141: Chapter 141
Dean left the apartment building with his next destination to go back to Evelyn so they could leave. At the moment, everything seemed to be taken care of concerning Veronica so he could leave the city before things got messy for him.
In the car, Dean thought about the call he tried to make to Liam to have him return to the house he shared with Veronica where he unexpectedly heard Veronica’s voice.
He choked up, not knowing what to say to her which made her confused as she tried to get an answer out of the caller. Dean hung up before he could say hello.
He came with one plan in mind which was to help her and get out of the city. To reveal who he was would only keep him here too long and make things dangerous for Veronica.
Instead of calling, Dean chose to text Liam that he was done and getting out of the city. From what Dean saw so far Liam was a good man but he had a messed up family too involved in trying to get power to run the city. Should Liam make a mistake, Dean would be right back in the city to deal with him.
Dean doubted it ever come to that after Liam shared videos and photos of Veronica from the time he met her till now.
Over an hour later, Dean returned to where Evelyn waited for him and all her belongings.
Evelyn stood by the front door, a luxury she got to enjoy once she started to behave instead of throwing tantrums.
"Missed me?" Dean asked, knowing it would upset her.
"Of course not. I want to know what you did with my husband. What did he say?" Evelyn asked, her nerves currently through the roof.
She knew how the situation looked with her not being home but if strange people came looking for her then Henry should have the sense to know what something was wrong.
"He signed the papers and from what I saw, he was happy to get rid of you. One less person to spend money on. He was going to pay me double what he thought you paid me to go after him. You married a funny man," Dean said as he walked by Evelyn.
"He signed it just like that? He didn’t ask where I was or-"
"He thinks you ran and left him when everything went downhill. I didn’t exactly share that I took you and kept you here. Still, you were leaving when I saw you and you weren’t going to return home until things calmed down. I got everything belonging to you. If something is missing, I’ll buy it," said Dean.
Evelyn looked at the cars which weren’t being offloaded so she could see what he brought. She followed Dean to get more answers out of him. "You didn’t tell me what I would be doing when I leave with you. Am I supposed to work or leech off of you?"
"Haven’t you leeched off of me for enough years? I deserve a break, don’t I? Which reminds me that you need to send the money you owe Veronica to her account by the end of the day. I’ll set up which account to use with her husband. Why are you looking at me like that?" Dean asked, not seeing why she was so surprised.
Dean continued, "That money was never for you to use. Maybe if it was just the two of you and you ran sort of money you could have used some but you had that husband you liked to flaunt and Veronica had nothing. You need to give her back something."
Evelyn didn’t see the need to take back the money when Veronica had Liam to help her. "I don’t have enough money to give her back what you sent and still be left with something. You can’t just leave me with nothing. How am I to take care of myself? Dean?"
Dean didn’t care how Evelyn would find money to use. "I don’t care how you take care of yourself. Had you done right by our daughter and not pocketed most of that money, you wouldn’t have to give it back now. I know about you telling that man I only sent a few thousand a month."
Evelyn couldn’t believe Henry ran his mouth off to a man he didn’t know. "It’s more complicated than it looks."
"Complicated?" Dean laughed. "You took money meant for our daughter and lied to your husband about how much there was. Then he was annoyed that he had to financially take care of our child. Doesn’t seem so complicated."
’I still gave her things. If she didn’t lose her memory she would tell you that. I tried to give her gifts so she wouldn’t be jealous of Beth or the girls around her. I tried hard to make it work with Veronica but she was difficult. Stubborn just like you," said Evelyn.
What was she to do when Veronica already decided that she didn’t like her mother? Evelyn could have given Veronica just a little bit more attention and love if she acted more like Beth did.
"Was it so bad to want a daughter like Beth?"
"Beth? Beth Harper? The woman who pushed your daughter into a pool, knew something about Veronica’s incident all along, and recently almost hit someone with her car then fled? That is what you wanted your daughter to be or will you blame all of this on Veronica?" Dean asked, then waited to see if Evelyn hadn’t learned yet.
Evelyn remained silent since she hadn’t thought about all the wrong things Beth did. She couldn’t believe Beth turned out.
"Right. We leave in an hour so shower if you need to now and get ready. I’ll find a job for you. Something that doesn’t deal with my work," Dean said before Evelyn could object. "I’ve already found you a place for you to start over with."
"Continue to do as you have been doing for years and forget you have a daughter. Don’t reach out to her in secret because I will find out and I will come for you. Next time I might not be so kind to you. You had that dream life you always wanted but now it’s time to go back to reality," said Dean.
Dean handed Evelyn the papers he had signed by Henry so she could see that it was time to move on. "I told him you didn’t need anything from him. Not that there would be anything to get. He’s going to lose that dealership soon."
Evelyn stared at Henry’s signature on the paper. She had already signed it because of Dean but seeing Henry’s signature felt different. She wanted to ball the paper up and discard it but what would that change?
She was currently at Dean’s mercy so she had to prepare to leave the city she saw as home for years.
